This quilt was created from 6-inch blocks. I used a quilt calculator app to help me figure out how much fabric to buy, and how much binding to make. I sewed the blocks on in random order.

One money-saving tip that I learned from my mother is to buy sheets from a second-hand store to use for quilt backs. It is much cheaper than buying material! For this quilt I pieced together two sheets, one king sized and one queen.

This was only the second time I had made my own binding, and I’m glad I did. It is not as hard as it seems at first and if you get your fabric on sale, it can be much cheaper. An added bonus is finding unique styles and colors that aren’t available in the pre-made variety. If you’ve never made binding before, there are a lot of online tutorials you can find. The binding for this particular quilt started out with three-inch strips.
